Food is available in the hotel bar as well as the Star of Siam, authentic Thai restaurant, both menus are available from a member of staff.

Our bar is open for drinks all day, there is a range of drinks available from soft drinks to alcoholic beverages.

Iron and Ironing board
An Iron and Ironing board is available upon request from reception located on the ground floor of the hotel.
Non slip bath mats can be requested at reception for use when showering.
Although we do not offer in house laundry we are happy to arrange for a service to come and collect your items and have them cleaned for return the same or following day. Prices vary depending on the amount of items and there is a minimum amount required for this service.
If you are due to return after 11:30pm please take the hotel’s telephone number with you so you can call us on your return. We lock the front of the hotel at around 11:45 however have a night porter on shift to assist.
In Room Beverages
We provide complimentary tea and coffee making facilities throughout your stay. Should you run short please ask for more at reception. Beverages can also be purchased at the bar and taken back to your room.
We are happy to serve your food in your room at an additional charge of £2.00, just order with us at the bar and we will take care of the rest.
Wake Up Call
Should you require a wake up call please speak to one of the staff who will arrange this for you.
We will usually service your room on a daily basis. If you do not wish us to service your room please leave the do not disturb sign on the outside of the door.
The Highfield Hotel has a strict no-smoking policy in our rooms, guests are free to smoke outside of the hotel but are politely reminded to dispose the cigarette ends in the ashtrays provided. If you have been smoking in your room, there will be a charge of £50 applied to your rooms bill.
We are conveniently situated between Durham, Sunderland, Newcastle and Peterlee we are perfectly situated as a base to access the North East with easy access just off the A690 between Sunderland and Durham, just off the A1M.
Durham City Centre is the closest and can be reached in 5 minutes in the car, there is also a park and ride located close by, just along the A690, if you wish not to take your car into the city centre. Sunderland is just a short drive away and can be reached if you drive in the opposite direction on the A690.
There is a bus service – No. 20 – available from just outside the hotel in both directions which takes you into the city centre of Durham and Sunderland.

The hotels location provides great access to the North East’s best attractions. within a 10 to 15 minute drive is Durham cathedral, Beamish, Seaham beach and Rainton Meadows nature reserve to name a few.
Rainton Meadows is a short walk from the hotel and provides fantastic trails through some of the North East’s most beautiful wild life. It attracts many different types of wildlife, including over 200 species of birds, many mammals and insects like butterflies.
The visitor centre is open daily from 11am – 4pm, it also offers fresh tea and coffee as well as snacks for the family with a playground for the kids. There are designated walking areas where you will come across the variety of wildlife and other features of the meadows.
Durham Cathedral is located in Durham city centre, it is a World Heritage Site and one of the greatest landmarks in the North East of England. Entry to the cathedral is free, however there are charges for guided tours and the newest Open Treasure Exhibition.
It was built in 1093 and has been a major place of worship ever since. Overlooking the riverbanks of Durham City Centre the views are breathtaking and definitely worth a visit.
Beamish is one of the largest open air museums telling the story of the North East of England. They always offer a variety of events throughout the year to suit the whole family so there’s never a dull day at Beamish. It is a great day out for the family, tickets fit everyone’s needs with adult, child, senior and family tickets available – all tickets last for one year.
